This has been released with the recent releases of Linchpin Suite and Linchpin User Profiles.

We are working on this at the moment: The search inside the new people directory will search for "word" as well as for "word*".
It will, however, not be possible to search for "*word". Not if you enter it manually and not automatically. That's a technical restriction Confluence gives us. With the next release of Linchpin User Profiles, Essentials and the Linchpin Suite this feature should be available.

Good day. Please do it. We are also looking forward to it.

I can report from various projects that nobody understands why this is not working like any other search. Please fix this very soon.

We are currently at the PoC and are planning a Golive for this year - and yes it is something that is criticized.

Hello Thomas Bowskill,
we decided to make the search as close as possible as the confluence search syntax and behavior, so that the search for people feels consistent to the search for content.

Robert Krause: thanks for the info - couldnt it become a marco feature that on submission will add in the asterix, so people can elect to keep consistent with Confluence or not when they add the macro. Also Confluence can get away with that search strictness because it suggests people as you type, but the linchpin marco doesn't (plus we are getting these macros because we dont want to be as close to typical confluence behaviour :))

Happy new year Robert Krause -- I am sure this one is top of your 2019 to-don list ;)
Interested to see if this is something you can include on the roadmap soon, as it's the only negative we see in this (unfortunately this causes the most frustration from our users).

Robert Krause with our intranet go-live I can confirm this as the most talked-about point. Our business doesn't know what wildcard searches are, and even with us having bright red text asking them to add the *, they are still assuming wildcards are built in.
Love the LP UP add-in, but this one thing has people asking us to look for alternates -- any chance I can get ideas on whether it will happen or if it's too minor to hit the roadmap?
